June 2015

Introduction

Another disappointing season is behind us. The last two seasons have been dominated by events of the park as much as by performances on it. We can only hope that our fortunes will take a turn for the better in season 2015-16, but ultimately that depends on factors very much in the control of the owners. Hopefully at least a new manager will breathe new life into a team and the Oyston family will back him with the necessary resources to do his job.

Earlier this year committee took a decision to sever connections with Karl Oyston. This decision was not taken lightly but was taken against the background of events that had taken place that had involved the Club Chairman. Having had direct contact in the past with the Chairman we have been a voice of the fans and have even arranged for Fans Forums thus enabling fans to meet with him directly. Even if sometimes there was a feeling of little progress the opportunity for our members views to be put to the Chairman was there.

The key aim of BSA is to successfully provide a link between the club and its fans, and to maintain a positive two-way relationship for the benefit of both parties. As you will appreciate this is not happening at present, but if we are to achieve the Associations aim, then at some time in the future we will need to look to resume our dialogue with the Chairman. The question is, given the current situation do you think we should continue to have no communication with Karl Oyston, or do you think we should, at present, seek to re-establish the link that we severed earlier this year? Members responses to info@blackpoolsupporters.com would be appreciated.

It is fair to say that that the Chairman is well of our views on a number of issues. Committee have told him. Individual members have told him. That being so BSA remains the only official supporters club. We have been offered by the Chairman a “Meet the Manager” night at the start of next season and also other possible events. We are looking at being able to resume our half time draw, if circumstances permit. What might remain missing, for now at least, is direct dialogue.

In Memory of Chris Hull

BSA were extremely saddened to hear of the sudden death of former Blackpool PA announcer Chris Hull whilst on holiday in Italy on 31 May 2015. Chris had been a great support to BSA at a number of events over the years; and was known for his passionate love of all things Tangerine and BFC.

Here BSA Chairman Glenn Bowley plays tribute to Chris:

"What can I say about Chris Hull. Without doubt one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He was totally bonkers and everyone knew it but that made him more special. His zest for life and all things BFC endeared him to so many.

There are so many stories to tell about Chris and so many memories. Many of my favourites usually involve being in his car travelling somewhere to set something up. Every time you got in his car he would always say with a
cheeky grin mind ***InsertName*** in the back. I would look on the back seat and there stood an urn with what I presume had someone's ashes in resting on the back seat. I didn't dare look to see if anything was in it!

I remember on the eve of Blackpool's crucial Championship game against Watford back in 2008, we organised a campaign featuring Simon Grayson as Kitchener. We had to get a result to ensure safety and Chris was nervously
excited about the big match. He called me the day before and said, "Glenny (he always called me that) we need to find out where the Watford players are staying as I have some industrial fireworks and I thought we could have a
little display in the hotel grounds so we can wake the team up!" I said "Chris you can't be serious we really won't get away with that" but he was absolutely serious. I didn't dare tell him that they were staying at the De Vere! Can you imagine the headlines?!

The times when we set up camp along with other fans at the helter skelter roundabout to see the players off on one of the many Wembley trips were always great fun. I remember we went to the roundabout and laid out the big shirt he had made as well as the big flag then jumped in his car to head back to Bloomfield Road to applaud the players onto the team coach. As we were driving back to the ground his phone went off and it was someone he knew from the council to say 'are you anything to do with this big shirt on the roundabout? Well it's blown away and traffic's at a standstill!' Cue dangerous u-turn and a frantic dash to get to the roundabout. When we got there a council worker had hold of the flag and said, 'I knew it would have something to do with you Chris; you're bloody mad!'

It was Chris, of course, who was behind the playing of the Dave Clark Five when Blackpool score. For now, we are Sad all over. Sad for his lovely family and sad to have lost such a good person. But the memories created and
shared will make us Glad All Over. Glad to have known him, Glad to have had he privilege of sharing BFC adventures with him.

Chris Hull - without doubt a towering tangerine beacon that shone across the Fylde and lit up the hearts of many.

RIP Chris. You really were one in a million."
